Jay Kamal

Jay Kamal is a cinematographer based in Vancouver, Canada, and Lyon, France, working worldwide on films, commercials, music videos, and documentaries. 

He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours in Film Production from the University of British Columbia and a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Film and Theatre from the University of Alberta.

After traveling around the world, learning four languages, and living abroad for most of his life, Jay developed a passion for diverse storytelling and strives to incorporate unique cultural elements into his cinematography.

Jay has worked in both camera and lighting departments in the film and television industry for years and has been mentored by some of the world’s most renowned cinematographers. He has been 2nd Unit Director of Photography and Camera Operator on large-scale television series such as Warner Brothers’ Batwoman and ABC Studio’s A Million Little Things.

His films have screened and won awards at international film festivals including Cannes, Edmonton, and Montréal. He is the winner of the Freda Springate Prize for Excellence in Film and the UBC Film Production Alumni Award.

He recently completed filming Jikirag, a horror feature film set in pagan times directed by Alexander Baxter; Roads of Ithriyah, a dramatic feature set in war-torn Syria directed by Javier Badillo; Fox and Hunter, a pilot for a detective comedy television series directed by Jesse Hutch; and Hey Smartbox, a horror thriller directed by Panta Mosleh.

He recently won Best Cinematography from the Film in Focus International Film Festival for his work on Not Your Average Bear, a comedy directed by Cliff Skelton, and invested in an ARRI Alexa Mini LF, the world’s most advanced cinema camera (Joker, 1916, Altered Carbon).
